Interesting how different people, specifically kids, are, and what they pay attention to. My youngest son loves numbers, always has. In 6th grade he will race home to do his math homework. Trying to get anything else out of him is like pulling teeth. The teacher has been sending home weekly sheets titled Math Matters that are supposed to be done with the family. They are fun brain teasers. I've looked at them a couple of times, and even talked with my son about them. Not consistently though. It's come out that he does them every week and gets extra credit for them. Last night I found out that he gets his older brother involved in solving them many times. My first reaction was how sweet is was that there was that relationship between them, and then how interesting that he made a point of finding another family member to do them with because that's what you are supposed to do. Of course since it's math he'll pay attention to it. My next question...How do I capture that with the camera? How do I communicate my experience in watching that learning and relating unfold?
For my project over break I'm taking self portraits. The fact that I do not like pictures of myself is one obstacle I'm working past. Trying to define a self portrait is another obstacle. For instance: Do I always have to be looking at the camera? Is it just head and shoulders or can it be a wider view? Do I have to be alone or can it include other people? Taking pictures of what I'm doing adds so much more time to things that I've only had the where-with-all to take a couple. I keep trying.
That's all I have time for today.
